Flux 3 Max vs FLUX 3: What Changed and Which to Use
Flux 3 Max vs FLUX 3: 11.5× lower latency, a 50-point Elo gain, the same list price, and fewer features. When to pick each Black Forest Labs video model.
Flux 3 Max vs FLUX 3 is not a contest between rivals. Flux 3 Max is FLUX 3 after another round of training. fal built it on Black Forest Labs' FLUX 3 foundation model with extra post-training, reinforcement learning and inference work, and released it on 19 October 2026 (fal press release). The result is faster and scores higher with human voters, but it gives up some of FLUX 3's tools.
This guide covers what improved, what was removed, what each costs, and how to decide between them for a given shot. To try the newer model, the Flux 3 Max video generator on our homepage runs it from a photo, two keyframes or a prompt.
Key Takeaways
- Flux 3 Max is a post-trained version of FLUX 3, made by fal with Black Forest Labs. Same family, different trade-offs.
- fal measured 10.95 seconds for a 10-second Flux 3 Max clip vs 126.44 seconds for FLUX 3, about 11.5× faster. An independent same-day test found a 3.6–5.3× gap including queue time.
- On the Artificial Analysis image-to-video board, Flux 3 Max scores 1,138 Elo vs 1,086 for FLUX 3, and their confidence intervals do not overlap.
- Flux 3 Max drops video editing, clip extension and 2K/4K output. Use FLUX 3 when you need those.
- fal's list price is the same for both, but Flux 3 Max is 75% off through 7 November 2026.
What Is the Difference Between Flux 3 Max and FLUX 3?
The short answer: Max is faster and better-rated on image-to-video, and FLUX 3 does more things. Black Forest Labs announced FLUX 3 on 23 July 2026 as its first video model, with native audio and clips up to 20 seconds (The Decoder). Flux 3 Max narrows that toolset and tunes it for speed and quality.

One detail trips up developers: Black Forest Labs' own public API lists flux-3-video but no Max endpoint, according to OrcaRouter's read of the OpenAPI document on 20 October. Flux 3 Max is a fal product. If you call BFL directly, you are getting FLUX 3.
How Much Faster Is Flux 3 Max?
fal reports that Flux 3 Max renders a 10-second video in 10.95 seconds, down from 126.44 seconds for FLUX 3. That is about 11.5 times faster in fal's lab conditions.
An outside test found a smaller but still large gap. SunoMV submitted both models to fal's public endpoints at the same moment on 20 October 2026 and timed submit-to-file, queue included.
| Job (720p, audio off) | FLUX 3 | Flux 3 Max, high reasoning | Flux 3 Max, low reasoning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text-to-video, 10 s | 76 s | 21 s | 13 s |
| Image-to-video, 5 s | 84 s | 16 s | — |
Source: SunoMV, 20 Oct 2026. One prompt, one day; SunoMV sells a product built on these models.
On that test, Max was 3.6× faster on text-to-video (high reasoning) and 5.3× faster on image-to-video. Queue time explains most of the distance from fal's 11.5× figure, so plan on real-world numbers closer to SunoMV's.
The speed matters more than it looks. At 15–20 seconds per render you can test several prompts for one shot in the time FLUX 3 takes to return a single clip.
Is Flux 3 Max Better Quality Than FLUX 3?
Yes, on image-to-video, and the gap is larger than the margin of error. Artificial Analysis lists Flux 3 Max (720p) at 1,138 Elo (95% CI 1,123–1,153) and FLUX 3 at 1,086 (1,070–1,102) on its blind-vote image-to-video board (Artificial Analysis, retrieved 20 Oct 2026). The ranges do not overlap. fal's release quotes an earlier snapshot: 1,089 to 1,139, a 50-point gain.
SunoMV's side-by-side adds texture to the score:
- Prompt following: on a scripted neon-alley shot, FLUX 3 kept the camera behind the subject and missed the turn and smile. Max on high reasoning hit the whole script with more detail.
- Low reasoning has a cost: Max on low reasoning was fastest and hit the action, but pushed a heavy magenta/teal grade and made the character look younger.
- Image-to-video faces: both models kept the source face stable, so speed was the main difference there.
For text-to-video work where the look matters, use high reasoning. Keep low reasoning for rough drafts.
How does Max stack up against models outside the family? It sits in a statistical tie with Seedance 2.5 and MiniMax H3 at the top of the board. See Flux 3 Max vs Seedance 2.5 for that matchup.
What Does Flux 3 Max Leave Out?
Flux 3 Max covers three modes: text-to-video, image-to-video and keyframes-to-video. SunoMV's review lists what is missing compared with FLUX 3:
- Video editing and video-to-video. You cannot restyle or edit an existing clip with Max.
- Extension and continuation. You cannot extend a Max clip from its last frame inside the model. Chain clips manually instead.
- 2K and 4K output. Max outputs 720p, with an optional 1080p upscale (VentureBeat). FLUX 3 offers resolution tiers up to 4K, per OrcaRouter's read of BFL's docs.
Neither model offers a true face lock from a set of reference photos. For that, use a reference-driven model such as Seedance. Our reference-to-video tool and AI video extender cover the jobs Max skips.
How Much Do Flux 3 Max and FLUX 3 Cost?
fal lists both at $0.17 per second at 720p and $0.29 per second at 1080p, according to SunoMV. Flux 3 Max is 75% off for its first three weeks, through 7 November 2026, which brings it to $0.0425 per second at 720p (fal press release, AlphaSignal).
| 10-second clip | FLUX 3 | Flux 3 Max, launch | Flux 3 Max, after 7 Nov |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | $1.70 | $0.43 | $1.70 |
| 1080p | $2.90 | $0.73 | $2.90 |
Our arithmetic from fal's per-second rates. Pricing on Black Forest Labs' own API differs: OrcaRouter cites $0.15 per second for HD in BFL's billing docs and higher rates on the model page FAQ, so check your invoice.
FLUX 3 also has a draft mode on BFL's API at $0.06 per second, HD and text-to-video only (OrcaRouter). On our homepage, Preview mode renders a quick FLUX 3 draft so you can block out a shot, then you switch it off to render the final Flux 3 Max clip. Credit costs for each option are on the pricing page.
Which Should You Use: Flux 3 Max or FLUX 3?
Default to Flux 3 Max for new clips, and keep FLUX 3 for jobs Max cannot do.
| Your job | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New clip from a photo | Flux 3 Max | Higher Elo, much faster, same or lower price |
| New clip from a prompt | Flux 3 Max (high reasoning) | Better prompt following in SunoMV's test |
| First-and-last-frame transition | Flux 3 Max | Both support it; Max is faster |
